Well, I've just returned from ArtExpo New York 2008. It was the 30th anniversary of this huge
exhibition and expectations were high.
It was my first exhibition for years and certainly my first international exhibition. As the time for the exhibition grew closer, I began to wonder whether I was doing the right thing. It's a fine art fair, and most of the stuff I was showcasing was what you'd call craft I suppose.
Anyway, I arrived in New York a day or two before set-up day, to acclimatise to my surroundings. As the other exhibitors booths went up, I began to feel really out of my depth, and thought "Either I'm at the wrong exhibition, or I'm at the right exhibition, with the wrong product.
The expected hordes of buyers didn't materialise (something to do with the downturn in the American economy perhaps?), and I felt quite down the first couple of days.
My lovely supportive husband (and biggest fan) Trev joined me to help on the booth, and things began to look up. I had loads of interest from buyers, made three unexpected sales and four fairly firm offers of projects from buyers, interior designers and publishers. I also came back with a commission for one of my reminiscence dresses. I'm really pleased. I got some lovely comments and feedback, like -
"There are only four artists here who stand out for me, and you're one of them."
"Great concept. I love it."
"I stopped in my tracks when I saw your work."
"You have a good eye."
and this from a seasoned photographer - "There's a real polish to your work. A great finish. Not many people showing here have it."
I can't tell you how great it is to hear stuff like this from people who aren't related or married to you.
One of my best friends, Anne, was also exhibiting, and sold 3 large paintings. We've both caught the exhibiting bug big time now, and will probably never be able to settle down to our day jobs now.
